Barbados, the Gem of the Caribbean Sea, has produced outstanding players like Rohan “Teno” Thomas who played in England and in the Swiss club BBHC, Cher King who played in the USA at the University of Massachusetts and most recent, Nakira Downes.

Nakira, is currently playing in NCAA Division 1 representing the university of Lock Haven where she achieved many personal awards as a player. Barbados is a beautiful island in the Caribbean where hockey is one of the main sports. In Barbados she was part of the Combermere School and part of the All Stars Club.

Nakira says: “The transition from Barbados hockey to the USA was very valuable. It wasn’t difficult but I was definitely forced to get out of my comfort zone and work harder. I came to realize that I’m not just in the USA to have a good time. Rather I was given the opportunity to play hockey for a division one team and showcase my talent. I had to work hard and not just for me but for my team because I was depended on. Playing against several top schools and some of the best players in the country really challenged me to be better and that’s what I needed. Additionally I wanted to be remembered not only for my hard work and dedication but my skills which in turn made my love and passion for hockey grow.”

She has experience with the Barbados National Team and is one of the most promising players in the Caribbean.
