Tactical analysis: Free hit outside the 23 meters line – attackers movement and positioning

Let’s analyse a set play with a free hit outside the 23 meters line. If you take a look at the circle positioning, the attackers of the white team start with 3 players in a vertical position aligned with the penalty stroke point.

When the player taking the free hit gets ready to send the ball inside, the 3 attackers make coordinated movements in order to find the scoring position.

1) The player on the top moves to the right in order to open the space for the ball to penetrate.
2) The second player moves forward to put himself in the position to score.
3) The third player moves to the left in order to open the goal and create a diversion.
