Legends of Australian Hockey: Grant Schubert

Grant Schubert is a legendary hockey attacker who was born in Australia, and helped his country to conquer the 2004 Olympic gold medal in Athens. In 2003 he was awarded the World Hockey Young Player of the Year and the most promising player of the 2003 Champions Trophy. In that tournament he scored nine goals in six matches. If you take under consideration that his debut with the Kookaburras was a few months before that tournament, this is a very impressive achievement!

However, his career took a big hit in 2006 when due to a knee injury, he had to miss the 2006 Men’s Hockey World Cup. In addition, he had to sit out of the 2008 Olympic Games semi-final and bronze medal matches due to a knee injury sustained in the last minor round game vs Great Britain.

He was able to achieve the first place at the 2009 Champions Trophy, where Australia defeated Germany in one of the most exciting final matches ever by 5 to 3. Unfortunately another injury in 2011, affected his career and had to be  removed from the Kookaburras squad for a while, this time he had an Achilles tendon injury.

His main achievements are:
2003 – Champions Trophy, Amstelveen (2nd place)
2004 – Olympic Games, Athens (1st place)
2005 – Champions Trophy, Chennai (1st place)
2006 – Commonwealth Games, Melbourne (1st place)
2006 – Champions Trophy, Terrassa (4th place)
2007 – Champions Trophy, Kuala Lumpur (2nd place)
2008 – Olympic Games, Beijing (3rd place)
2008 – Champions Trophy, Rotterdam (1st place)
2009 – Champions Trophy, Melbourne (1st place)
2010 – World Cup, New Delhi, India (1st place)
