“Goon” (2011)

This Canadian sports drama is based on the real story of Doug Smith, an American retired minor-league ice hockey player and co-author of “Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey”. The movie became an adaptation of this book.”Goon” is a name for a hockey enforcer, a player on a hockey team whose job is to take out the opponent’s top forwards and prevent them from doing the same to a player on their team. The main protagonist of the film, Doug (Sean William Scott), works as a bouncer in the night club and doesn’t know anything about hockey, but the coach of the hockey team wants him to be the enforcer. The team’s low ranking is skyrocketing thanks to the success of Doug, who has made a way from a nightclub bouncer to a real hockey Star. “Doug” is a heartwarming and inspiring comedy that reveals many of the hidden sides of minor league hockey. 

 “The Rocket: The Legend of Rocket Richard” (2005)

This Canadian-French biopic, also known as “The Rocket” is based on the story of the legendary Montreal Canadiens player Maurice Richard, nicknamed “The Rocket”.  The movie is about an iconic era in NHL history and the legendary player Maurice Richard, who led his team to a record five Stanley Cup victories. Maurice was born into a poor family in Montreal and it  turned out that the guy has real talent. Richard is the first hockey player in history to score 50 pucks in a single season and within the first fifty games. Maurice was a kind of symbol for French Canadians, they were disadvantaged in many ways and Maurice became their idol. 

“Miracle” (2004)

This movie is set in the height of the Cold War Era. By the 1980s, the USSR team dominated the ice field. The victory of the US team over the Soviet hockey players in the 1980 Winter Olympics was called a miracle. The US Olympic coach (Kurt Russell), 7 months before the start of the Olympic tournament is appointed coach of the national team. His task is to try to give a worthy fight to the USSR national team. He finds a non-trivial solution, and instead of famous players, he recruits the most energetic, promising, and talented players from student clubs, and then begins to create a cohesive team of professionals. The US hockey team managed to win the Gold Medal during the 1980 Winter Olympics. This is a movie about fortitude, the desire to win, and how a good coach can bring a team together.
