“Coaching does not equal babysitting”, Ric Charlesworth explains a very important coaching concept that you should know!

“Coaching does not equal babysitting”, during the first online conference organised by Hockeytoday.cc, Ric Charlesworth shared a very important piece of advice for coaches of every level.

He explained that followers just want comfort, stability and solutions from the leaders (coaches), and that is just babysitting. True leaders instead try to get people out of their comfort zones. If you want your team to become a special one, you will have to take players to places where they never thought that they could be, taking them to an uncomfortable positions. This is why babysitting players is not succesful.

This conference had Master Coach Ric Charlesworth as the keynote speaker, but also had the participations of Pirmin Blaak, Santi Freixa, Justin Reid-Ross, Laurine Delforge, Annemieke Griffin-Zijerveld and Mark Cairns. Make sure to visit www.hockeytoday.cc to watch the full conference!

On the meantime let’s watch Charlesworth explaining this concept:

Coaching vs babysitting

Ric Charlesworth on coaching vs babysitting in his keynote at the first ever online Coach Conference at www.hockeytoday.cc : “Followers want comfort, stability and solutions from their leaders but that’s babysitting. Real leaders ask hard questions and knock people out of their comfort zones. They manage the resulting distress.”
